FOR THE LONG RUN - A HISTORY

They’re drawn to the positive effects running has on the mental and physical health
others see it as a chance to socialise with like-minded individuals; many partake in marathons for its charitable awareness; and for some, it’s about creating fresh new experiences in their lives. SHM is one of Malaysia’s most anticipated events amongst Malaysian sports fans and contestants. With additional entertainment like dancing bands, lion dance acrobatic displays and hot-air balloon rides, SHM is ultimately about bringing people together!

What we have achieved
1987
The first ever Seremban Half Marathon in 1987 saw 4000 participants from near and far taking part, with an aim to motivate runners to spend time exploring the Seremban landscape. The inaugural SHM saw top-tier runners vying for first place alongside YAM Tunku Naquiyuddin who completed the Half Marathon well within qualifying time. The run
raised RM21,000 to kick-start the Junior Athletes Development Fund, making SHM more than just a run, but an important philanthropic event.
Encik Said Harun took first place and won a terrace house in Taman Tuanku Ja’afar
1994
The Fun Run is initiated to include runners of all ages, genders, races and especially the physically and mentally challenged and along the way, SHM adapted to be more inclusive, providing special categories for the young, old and physically and mentally challenged. This allowed a broader range of participants, which made SHM an exciting annual sporting event for all races, age and gender
1997
Celebrated SHM’s 10th anniversary with a VIP Fun Run!
2004
Open to international runners, 2004 was the year of the “Thai Invasion” where 7 Thai nationals won major prizes.
2008
The international allure of SHM continues with Kenyan runners stealing the show. Unfortunately, this was the same year that saw the passing of Negeri Seremban ruler Tuanku Ja’afar, aged 86.

2019

2022
As Malaysia’s longest-running marathon, SHM has found it essential to be on par with international marathons. This means staying technically innovative for today and the future. From timing chips to microfibre active attire, it’s just a matter of time to see what else the future of running holds for SHM.
